On April 6, the Laney College June Steingart Art Gallery exploded with sights and sounds during the closing reception for the “Sisters of the Struggle: Women of the Black Panther Party” exhibit.
“Poetry is a weapon for social change!” Laney English Professor Jackie Graves proclaimed, as powerful images of the Panthers’ social movement framed her.
The gallery was standing-room only, as many gathered to see Graves and others perform, as well as to walk through the collecton of art, illustraations, and photographs — some by Panthers themselves.
The exhibit is part of an ongoing celebration of the 50th anniversary of the Black Panthers Party.
The Black Panthers was founded in Oakland in 1956 by Huey Newton and Bobby Seale, both of whom had attended Merritt College.

Other performers included a local saxophonist (left) and Laney College English Professor Adrianne Oliver, a new hire this semester, who recited her own original poetry.

The exhibit will be open until April 15. The gallery is open Mon. through Thurs., 11 AM to 5 PM.
