Laney parking lot break-in costs staff member $500 damages

Photo taken by Ben Njau of his broken-in car provided by his email sent on Wednesday regarding the incident.

UMOJA-UBAKA program and staff assistant Ben Njau received a call from officer Bridges on Wednesday (Jan. 9) that his car was broken into at around 11:00 a.m. In an email sent to Laney faculty and staff, Njau mentions it happened during a downpour, making for low visibility in the parking lot. “I didn’t go to work because I was dealing with this,” Njau said. “I lost wages because I am part-time.”

Njau suggested more cameras and officer patrols in the parking lot to maintain better safety and security. He also indicated that all belongings in cars should be out of sight when parked. With his car window smashed and stereo system removed, Njau was thankful his stroller was not stolen, which he had stored in the trunk.

Dear Laney faculty and staff. Our plans for the spring semester

are to keep you informed about breaking news as it happens. In addition,

since not everyone gets to read the print Tower, we will also send the online

Tower to everyone in the district on publication day. If you have news tips

or comments, please contact me at [email protected].

    About the Contributor
In the fall of 2019, The Laney Tower rebranded as The Citizen and launched a new website. These stories were ported over from the old Laney Tower website, but byline metadata was lost in the port. However, many of these stories credit the authors in the text of the story. Some articles may also suffer from formatting issues. Future archival efforts may fix these issues.
