Peralta Board of Trustees announce Dr. Jannett Jackson as new Interim Chancellor

Board approves new Interim Chancellor in 7-0 vote during Tuesday’s meeting

At the March 23rd Board of Trustees Meeting, Dr. Jannett Jackson was announced as the new Interim Chancellor for the Peralta Community College District (PCCD) to replace Dr. Carla Walter.

During the report on closed session, Board Vice-President, Nicky Gonzalez Yuen announced the unanimous 7-0 vote. “The Board voted to appoint Dr. Jannett Jackson as the Interim Chancellor, pending negotiations of the employment agreement on a motion by myself, seconded by trustee Withrow.” Gonzales Yuen said.

Jackson is no stranger to Peralta, having served as the College of Alameda’s vice president of instruction, interim president and president until 2013 when she was appointed chancellor of the Chabot-Las Positas Community College District. Jackson left College of Alameda after filling two years of a three year contract. Peralta’s then Chancellor Jose M. Ortiz said he was “sorry to see her go. She was doing a good job at College of Alameda.”

Jackson was Chancellor (retired) from Chabot-Las Positas Community College District Jul 2013-Sept. 2018 and that she obtained her Ph.D. from the University of Texas, Austin in Educational Administration.

It was unclear from the report whether Jackson would immediately replace Walter or wait until Walter is currently set to leave on April 15th, two months before the end of her contract. Walter issued her resignation on March 17, citing “personal reasons.”

Pamela Rudd, Opinion Editor
This is Pamela Rudd’s fourth semester at Laney College and her third as a staff writer for The Citizen. Pam was born in San Francisco and grew up in Contra Costa County when cattle roamed the hills and life had yet to cross from rural to suburban. She attended college directly after high school and received a doctorate from the University of Nevada, Reno in psychology. As a Bay Area native she witnessed the Vietnam War, the Free Speech and Black Panther movements, the AIDS crisis, and the birth of Silicon Valley. Pamela is always amazed by the resiliency of the human spirit and the repetitiveness of history. She is excited to be back in school and to be part of The Citizen’s newsroom. For Pam, journalism was the path not taken.
Luke Wrin Piper, Consulting Editor
Luke Wrin Piper began writing for The Citizen in 2019. Starting at the sports desk, his focus has expanded into politics, art, activism, crime and all the ways they intersect here in the 510. The people and culture of the East Bay have never failed to fascinate him and he hopes to bottle that local lightning for The Citizen. He thinks there’s never been a better time to be alive, especially for journalists.
