Thrill of victory, agony of defeat

Football team beats Sacramento City; suffers shutout against CCSF

FootballThe Laney College football team goes for its second victory in three games when the Eagles travel to Rocklin on Saturday, Sept. 19, to take on Sierra College. Game time is 1 p.m.
Laney opened its 2015 season with a 21–13 victory at home against Sacramento City College on Sept. 4, and then was shut out, 28–0, on Sept. 12 at City College of San Francisco.
CCSF 28, Laney 0: The Eagles, suffering their first shutout loss since 2004, played the Rams (2–0) fairly even for the first 20 minutes of the game until the wheels came off.
The Rams’ Robert Taylor took a short punt and ran right through the middle of the Eagles’ defense for a 45-yard punt return score that gave CCSF a 7–0 lead with 9:10 left in the second quarter.
Dale Elijah (29, carries, 112 yards, two touchdowns) scored on a 1-yard run with 3:14 left in the second quarter for 14–0. Laney’s Devante McGowen fumbled the ensuing kickoff at the Eagles’15. City’s Vince Camp picked up the loose ball and ran 15 yards for another score for 21–0.
The Eagles’ best chance to score came at the start of the third quarter when they drove from their own 31 to the Rams’ 2, the big play being Ryan Gordan’s 27-yard run to the CCSF 38.
But two running plays lost four yards and two passes fell incomplete, giving CCSF the ball on its own 6.
The Rams then went 94 yards in 15 plays and Dale scored his second touchdown on a 3-yard run with 1:16 left in the third quarter.
That just about did it for Laney’s victory chances.
Laney 21, Sacramento City 13: The Eagles started off the season in winning style, as quarterback Shawn Hessler threw two touchdown passes to Darneail Jenkins and Jordan Whittley ran for one against the visiting Panthers (0–1).
Whittley (13 carries, 67 yards) scored on a 1-yard run with 3:31 left in the first quarter to give the Eagles a 7–0 lead. Whittley’s score was set up when Patrick Cheek recovered a Sac City fumbled punt on the Panthers’ 16.
A field goal and safety cut the Laney lead to 7–5, but Hessler threw hit first touchdown pass, a 10-yarder to Jenkins with 10 seconds left in the second quarter for a 14–5 halftime lead.
Hessler threw 18 yards to Jenkins for a score and a 21–5 lead with 5:09 left in the third quarter, but the Panthers drove 80 yards in nine plays to cut the lead to 21–13 with 8:19 left in the game.
Laney ran 103 plays and gained 391 yards. Sacramento City had six turnovers, including four interceptions. The Eagles had just one turnover.
