WOTQ — Why is it important for everyone to understand Black History?

    Patricia Ellis, Real Estate Major

I do think it’s important that we remember Black History, but in addition to that I think it’s also important that we cover and that we all have knowledge of history in general to break our cycle of injustice.

    Sophia Landes, Communications Major

Remembering Black History, along with all histories, is important because the only way to prevent past social injustices, such as slavery and prejudiced behavior, is to acknowledge and learn from our mistakes.

    Marirose Febo, Cosmetology Major

We get to know more of their history and how they dealt with certain situations. We get to understand their culture, music and language and it allows us to express more empathy.

    Martha Tellez, Education Major

It’s important to not forget the past and not recreate the same mistakes. When we look at our current climate it seems like we are stuck in a cycle, but understanding history will allow us to create a better future.

    Ari Minor, English Major

Their history has always been overlooked and it’s important that we pay attention, and not just think about it for one month but every day.

    About the Contributor
In the fall of 2019, The Laney Tower rebranded as The Citizen and launched a new website. These stories were ported over from the old Laney Tower website, but byline metadata was lost in the port. However, many of these stories credit the authors in the text of the story. Some articles may also suffer from formatting issues. Future archival efforts may fix these issues.
